When Google Gemini’s Gems was first pre-launched back at the Google I/O event months ago, it was announced as a way to let users easily create custom AI tools for their specific needs. The good news now is that the feature is finally available for use as a part of Gemini’s August 2024 update.

Similar to OpenAI’s custom GPTs, Google Gemini’s Gems lets you build AI-driven tools that are tailored to your needs, whether it’s copy editing, marketing, or education. You can also customize them or use them from a set of premade templates, accessible via the Gemini platform for users with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-ons.

Gems are available on desktop and mobile devices in over 150 countries.

“In a few easy steps, you can describe what you want your Gem to do and how you’d like it to respond — Gems will help complete specific goals, tasks, and workflows based on your inputs,” Google explains how it works.

On OpenAI’s ChatGPTs, paid premium users have access to custom GPTs—advertised as your “custom versions of ChatGPT.” The Microsoft-backed company launched the feature months ago back in November 2023, so it’s surprising that customizable Gems has just started to be a thing now. But on ChatGPT, you can also share your custom GPTs on the store.

“Gems will remember the instructions you provide, and you can access them when needed to help save time on repetitive tasks or get deep expertise,” the AI giant continues.
