OpenAI has announced a lot of changes to its roadmap that will affect the future of its models on ChatGPT, including the reasoning-excelling o1 and o3 models.

So now, the Microsoft-backed company revealed that it will discontinue the o3 model, opting instead to integrate its functionality into the upcoming GPT-5. This move is part of a broader strategy to kill the “model picker” that has been a source of frustration for many users.

“We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence,” OpenAI boss Sam Altman says. The boss also mentions that the model is coming in a matter of “weeks or months.”

The transition will begin with the release of GPT-4.5, internally referred to as Orion, which will mark the end of non-chain-of-thought models. GPT-5 will then take center stage and combine all the AI smarts from both the GPT-series and o-series models.

It’s a common secret that, if you’re not too deep in the AI boom, you may get confused about which models to use on ChatGPT with gazillions of them floating around since the launch.

Still from ChatGPT-related news, OpenAI also now allows file and image uploads for ChatGPT users with o1 and o3-mini models, although the rollout is uneven across regions. It’s also raised o3-mini-high limits to 50 per day for ChatGPT Plus users, which is 7 times more than its current limit.
